Presunto culpable: trailer

Presunto culpable premiered on Antena 3 in September 2018 and follows Jon Arístegui, an investigator living in Paris, as he returns to the Basque town he left years earlier. His girlfriend Anne’s disappearance is still unresolved there. The town is Mundaka, and the surrounding coast weighs as much in the series as the cast: the production company Boomerang TV wrote that the series “makes its surroundings a leading character”.

Filming began in November 2017 and lasted 23 weeks. The first five were in Mundaka, and in April 2018 there was a third block of filming in the area. When it wrapped, Boomerang TV published a fairly precise list of places: the harbour, streets, town hall, breakwater, seafront and hermitage of Mundaka; the harbour and streets of Bermeo; Cape Matxitxako; San Juan de Gaztelugatxe; the beaches of Laga, Laida and Arribolas; the Urdaibai Bird Center and the AZTI laboratories in Sukarrieta, plus some streets in Bilbao.

This guide covers nine of those places. Each has at least two sources: a publication about the shoot (the production company, Antena 3 or the Basque press) and the listing for the place with its exact location. Some places on the list are not here, such as Arribolas cove or the Arteaga cemetery, because we could not verify access or the scene.

Almost everything lies within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, in a radius of about 20 km around the estuary. Mundaka and its hermitage can be done on foot. For the estuary, the Ibarrangelu beaches, Matxitxako and Gaztelugatxe you will need a car, although the Euskotren from Bilbao to Bermeo stops at Sukarrieta, Mundaka and Bermeo. If you go in winter you will see these places in the same grey light and rough sea as on screen.

Route 1

Mundaka on foot: the town from the series

Duration
1.5 h
Transport
On foot
Stops

The series is set in Mundaka, and the crew spent its first five weeks of filming here. The harbour and the Santa Catalina hermitage are about 300 metres apart as the crow flies, so the walk is easy and leaves time to watch the wave from the headland.

  1. Stop 1: Harbour Euskotren, Bilbao-Bermeo line, Mundaka station
  2. 5 min on foot
  3. Stop 2: Santa Catalina 5 min from Mundaka harbour
  1. Stop 1: Puerto de Mundaka (Mundaka harbour)

The town in Presunto culpable is Mundaka, and the harbour is its centre. The production company Boomerang TV lists the harbour, streets, town hall, breakwater and seafront of Mundaka among the locations, and all of them lie within a few minutes' walk. The town hall stands right beside the quay, and from the breakwater you can see the mouth of the estuary with Laida beach opposite.

Locals took part as extras and the town's bars and restaurants worked with the crew during filming, as Noticias de Navarra reported on the day of the premiere. Turismo Urdaibai suggests wandering the little streets, spending a while at the harbour and climbing to the Portuondo or Atalaya viewpoints. Mundaka is also a surf town: its left-hand wave starts at the sandbar and ends at Laida.

Antena 3 presented it as “the place where it all begins”. Alejandra Onieva shot her first day here, a sequence with Miguel Ángel Muñoz that opens the story. The hermitage also appears in many of the series' promotional photos, as FormulaTV points out.

It stands apart from the town, on a small headland by the sea. Turismo Urdaibai describes it as a tall, bulky hermitage, and its surroundings have become a seaside recreation area. It is a short walk from the harbour. This guide covers the exterior only; if you want to see the inside, ask at the Mundaka tourist office.

Route 2

The Urdaibai estuary by car

Duration

The second route follows the estuary inland and returns along the opposite bank to the sea. It links the Sukarrieta laboratories, the bird centre at Gautegiz Arteaga and two beaches in Ibarrangelu. Allow about 35 km of driving in total.

  1. Stop 1: AZTI Euskotren, Bilbao-Bermeo line, Sukarrieta station
  2. 20 min by car
  3. Stop 2: Bird Center Bizkaibus A3513 Bilbao-Gernika-Lekeitio, stop 1855 Zelaieta
  4. 20 min by car
  5. Stop 3: Laida From Gernika along the east bank of the estuary, towards Ibarrangelu
  6. 7 min by car
  7. Stop 4: Laga From Laida on the road from Ibarrangelu to Elantxobe
  1. Stop 1: AZTI en Sukarrieta (Txatxarramendi island)

Exterior of the laboratories in the series

AZTI is a marine and food research centre based on Txatxarramendi island, in Sukarrieta. Boomerang TV lists its laboratories among the locations of the series, and FormulaTV places the laboratories, one of the most important settings in the plot, in the Sukarrieta area.

It is a private workplace: there are no visits and you must not enter the grounds. What you can do is view the surroundings from the road and the edge of the estuary, with the wooded island and the anchored boats in front. It is worth a stop if you are driving from Mundaka towards Gernika, because it is on the way and less than two kilometres from the harbour.

The bird centre in the Urdaibai reserve is run by the Aranzadi science society, which described the crew's visit on its website. The most important sequences were shot at the large viewing hide over the marsh, and Carol Rovira, who plays Maite, took part in a real bird-ringing session.

It is about 4.5 km from Gernika, on the right bank of the River Oka. Opening hours change with the season. From November to 27 February it opens on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 16:00 and is closed on weekdays. In July and August it opens every day from 10:00 to 18:00. The website does not publish prices, so check fares on the official site. The two observatories on the outdoor circuit are free to enter.

  3. Stop 3: Playa de Laida (Laida beach)

Beach exteriors at the mouth of the estuary

Laida is the stretch of sand you see from Mundaka harbour, across the river mouth. Boomerang TV and Naiz include it among the filming beaches along with Laga and Arribolas. Turismo Urdaibai notes that Mundaka's famous left-hand wave ends here, having started at the bar opposite.

At low tide the sand stretches far out towards the estuary and you can walk along the shore with Mundaka in the background. The series was shot between November and April, so you see it on screen in winter light and almost without people. Bear in mind that the estuary water runs strongly when the tide turns.

Laga is a few kilometres from Laida, already on the open sea and beneath the limestone wall of Mount Ogoño. The production company lists it among the filming beaches, and it is easy to recognise by the grey crag that closes the beach on the west.

It is a wide beach, with a lone house at the foot of the mountain. In winter, when the series was shot, the surf is usually strong and the mood suits the tone of the series. From here the road continues along the coast to Elantxobe, if you want to finish the route in another fishing village. Check the state of the sea before swimming out of season.

Route 3

Bermeo, Matxitxako and Gaztelugatxe

Duration
Half a day
Transport
Car
Stops
3 locations

The third route leaves from Bermeo's old harbour and follows the coast westwards. It is about 15 km to the Gaztelugatxe car park, but the walk down to the hermitage and back takes longer than the drive. Check the booking calendar before setting out.

  1. Stop 1: Bermeo Euskotren, Bilbao-Bermeo line, Bermeo terminus
  2. 12 min by car
  3. Stop 2: Matxitxako BI-3101 from Bermeo to Bakio, signposted turning to the lighthouse
  4. 10 min by car
  5. Stop 3: Gaztelugatxe BI-3101 between Bermeo and Bakio
  1. Stop 1: Puerto viejo de Bermeo (Bermeo old harbour)

Streets and fishing harbour of the area

Bermeo is a few kilometres from Mundaka and the production company lists its streets and harbour among the locations. In February 2018, as the third month of filming was about to end, Deia reported that the crew was working in Bilbao, Gaztelugatxe, Mundaka and Bermeo, and Boomerang TV executive producer Josep Cister thanked the councils of Mundaka and Bermeo.

The old harbour is the most photogenic part: narrow coloured houses, café terraces and the old quarter rising behind. Above the quay stands the Ercilla Tower, the oldest civil building Bermeo still has, which has housed the Fisherman's Museum since 1948; check opening times on its official website. Turismo Urdaibai counts it among the most important inshore fishing ports on the Cantabrian coast.

  2. Stop 2: Faro y mirador del cabo Matxitxako (Cape Matxitxako lighthouse and viewpoint)

    Forest, lighthouse and sea-view exteriors

    Photo: Vanbasten 23 / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0

Matxitxako is the most prominent cape on the Basque coast, between Bermeo and Gaztelugatxe. The production company's note speaks of the “Matxitxako Lighthouse Forest and the cape viewpoint”, and Naiz repeats the list. The working lighthouse is a stone tower with white outbuildings and red roofs; a few metres away stands the old lighthouse.

The working lighthouse is in a closed compound and is seen from outside; you can walk up to the old one. The walk to the viewpoint is short and on windy days the sea breaks hard against the cape. From here you can see the coast towards Gaztelugatxe, the next stop.

Antena 3 devoted a report to this setting with Itziar Atienza and Alejandra Onieva, who play Ainhoa and Anne. Both agree the place suits the story and their characters. It is the rocky islet with the hermitage on top, joined to the land by a stone bridge and a long flight of steps.

It is a protected natural area. On the dates marked in the official calendar, booking is compulsory; it is done at tiketa.eus, with a maximum of 10 tickets per request, and if you do not turn up within 60 minutes of your slot you lose the place and cannot book for a year. Outside those dates the website does not require a booking. Drones, loose dogs and leaving the paths are prohibited. The official website does not publish a price.

Tips before you go

  • Book Gaztelugatxe before you set out

On the dates in the official calendar you cannot enter without a booking. Make it at tiketa.eus and keep the confirmation on your phone until the visit is over.

  • The Bird Center is closed on weekdays in winter

From November to 27 February it opens only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, 10:00 to 16:00. The outdoor observatories are free to enter.

  • Euskotren for the Mundaka route

The Bilbao-Bermeo line stops at Sukarrieta, Mundaka and Bermeo. For Laida, Laga, Matxitxako and Gaztelugatxe you need a car.

  • Check the tide

At Mundaka and Laida the view changes a lot with the tide. At low tide Laida gains sand; at high tide Mundaka harbour fills with water.
